Thumbplay is an ringtone service provider based out of New York. It is jointly owned by j-Hatch Ventures and SoftBank Capital. Thumbplay Inc. provides ringtones, graphics, games, applications, chat rooms, dating or matchmaking services, and mobile streaming via cellphones.
There are nearly 50 genres of music on their ring tone list.
There are the standard genres, like hip hop, jazz, and classic rock.
There are also other global niches like Latin Rock, Reggaeton Nation
and Bollywood.
The site also breaks songs down into decades. There are links for any set of years between the fifties and the nineties. Of course, there are contemporary 21st century songs, too.
Thumbplay.com offers an internal search engine, so you an select a tune using keyword references.
The wallpaper section has 18 different genre links. These include a wide range of pictures, including subjects like sports, babes or cartoons. There is also a bestseller link, for the most wanted wallpapers.
There are fewer animations, which are one of the newer features offered on the site. These break down into only 8 different links, though there is a best seller option at the top of the page.
The games section has 7 different genres. The list categories are action/adventure, arcade puzzle, board games, fun variety, racing, sports and strategy. There is also a link for the most popular games.
The text messaging comes in their own plans, and are a little expensive in my opinions. There are some interesting offerings, but most of them cost $9.99 a month. Among the list on Daily Insults, Bible Quotes, Booze Tips, Daily Inspiration and Hip Hop Gossip.
Some of the most popular ThumbPlay ringtones as of December 2009 include Flo Rida ringtones, Paramore ringtones, Keith Urban ringtones, and Nickelback ringtones.
Payment is on the credit system. If you pay $9.99 per month, you get 10 credits to spend on ringtones, wallpapers and games. Most of these are valued at one credit apiece.
Those who join Thumbplay get 10 bonus ringtones. The monthly plan gives you 10 credits to spend on ringtones, so new members get 1 month of free downloads.
Most of the bigger telecommunications providers are compatible with Thumbplay downloads. Those included on this list are Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericcson, Motorola, LG and Panasonic. Other supported phone services are Boost, Sprint PCS, AT&T, Nextel, T-Mobile and Cingular.
