Creating a Custom Ringtone for an iPhone 3G Using the iPhone 3G Interface
and the iTunes Store
The robust capabilities of the iPhone 3G make it perfect for creating custom
ringtones directly from the iPhone interface. Although many of them don’t know
it, iPhone 3Gs can access the iTunes store from within the phone’s interface.
This gives users the ability to create and download custom ringtones at any time
and at any place.
The process for creating an iPhone 3G ringtone involves converting a song
from the user’s iTunes library (or a newly purchased song) into a completely
customized ringtone by using the tools built into the iPhone. This procedure is
outlined below.
- On the iPhone 3G, got to the “Settings” menu, and then chose the iTunes
store icon by tapping it. If there is not currently an iTunes account
associated with the phone, users have the opportunity to create one now.
- Using the controls on the iPhone interface, navigate to the music tab of
the iTunes store and browse through the available titles. Users can also
search for title names and artists, or they can browse top ten lists or view
songs by genre. The iTunes store also lists featured selections by artists
that are popular or up and coming.
- When the user has found a song to purchase, double click the “Buy” icon
to purchase the song and to begin the download. As the song downloads, a
download progress will be shown on the screen.
- When the song is finished downloading, it becomes part of the phone’s
media library and will sync with iTunes.
- Creating a ringtone from the new song is tricky at first, but is a
fairly straightforward process. Just select “Store” followed by the “Create
Ringtone” option. The user then uses a list to select a song for use as a
custom
ringtone. When this happens, the ringtone editor application appears on the
iPhone 3G’s screen.
- Using the controls found right on the screen, the user of the iPhone
chooses which part of the song will become a ringtone.
- Besides the pop-up loop editor, the user can decide how long the clip
will be as well as the clip will fade out or fade in.
- Using the preview option, verify that the ringtone has been saved
correctly. The ringtone can be edited at no charge before the ringtone is
paid for.
- Select “Buy” to download and purchase the ringtone involved.
- After the download progress bar completes, the ringtone is available for
use on the iPhone 3G.
Users assign custom ringtones to the alarm clock or to specific contacts the
same way they select ordinary ringtones on the iPhone.
With just a few simple steps iPhone 3G owners can use their imagination and
creativity to personalize their phone by creating custom ringtones and using
them on their iPhone.
